Bruce and Hoops

It’s March in Kentucky, and that means only one thing. College basketball. Even in the middle of a busy gubenatorial campaign, basketball is still important to Bruce and Greg.

So while the Louisville Cardinals prepare for their Big East Tournament opener in New York, and the Kentucky Wildcats just won their first game in the Southeastern Conference tourney in Atlanta, I thought it would be apt to ask Bruce about his basketball bona fides.

“That’s an easy one,” he said. “Kentucky is always where my heart is and where I went to school.”

There’s likely to be some talk about where the candidates stand on the hoops issue – but none have the criteria of Bruce Lunsford. Growing up in Kenton County, Bruce was a standout in basketball (see photos here), despite being 5-8, and dreamed of playing for the Big Blue. While he never realized that dream, he became a student at UK and is a lifelong supporter of the Wildcats.

But Bruce also has strong ties to the University of Louisville basketball program. He told me he became friends with Coach Rick Pitino when he came to UK back in 1989, and has maintained that friendship ever since. Bruce and Pitino also share a passion for horse racing.

During the season, Bruce is a regular at both Rupp Arena and Freedom Hall.

During the Frankfort rally Tuesday night, running mate Greg Stumbo gave his own perspective on his allegiance to UK. In his moving speech before 400 people at the Capital Plaza Hotel, Stumbo talked about converting his wife Mary Karen (at one time an Ohio State Republican) into a Big Blue supporter…and a Democrat.

Go Cats and Go Cards... Best of luck in the next couple of weeks.... We'll be rooting you on.
